Somaclonal and Gametoclonal Work in India
Somaclonal and gametoclonal variation technology has been used for developing new cultivars. New cultivars through this approach have been obtained in sugarcane (Sugarcane Research Institute = SRI, Coimbatore), lemon grass (Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants = CIMAP, Lucknow), rice (Indian Agricultural research Institute = IARI, New Delhi), Brassica (IARI, TERI, New Delhi), turmeric and custard apple (NCL, Pune), etc. However, in some of these cases the genetic basis of the variation introduced, will have to be confirmed using inheritance studies.
