Use of Haploids in Species with Disomic Inheritance
Production of homozygous lines
The most important use of haploids, often advocated, is their use in the production of homozygous lines, which may be directly used as cultivars or may be used in breeding programmes. For instance, a double haploid, ‘Marglobe tomato’ has been used commercially. Similarly, doubled haploids were used as inbred lines in hybrid maize programme.

However, the chief limitation in the use of haploids for production of homozygous lines had been the low frequency, with which they were available. In recent years, the availability of anther culture technique and the use of crosses with Hordeum bulbosum in barley, and with maize in wheat have led to the production of haploids in high frequency. greatly accelerated the pace of research for production of haploids and their use for getting doubled haploids (DHs).
