Other Plant Genomes
Other plant genomes that may be used for whole genome sequencing include sorghum (~750 Mb) among cereals and millets, Lotusjaponicus(~500Mb) and Medicago truncatula(~450 Mb) among legumes. Brassica napus(~1200 Mb) among oilseeds and poplar (~530Mb) among trees. Towards the end of 2001 and at the beginning of 2002, initiation of the first Legume Genome Project, i.e. sequencing of the entire genome of Medicago truncatulawas announced in USA. The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation (founded by Lloyd Noble) announced that it will fund the project with an initial additional grant of US $ 5 million, thus raising the available grant for the project to US $ 10 million.
