Management of data for functional genomics
In recent years, there has been an exponential growth of data. For example, the number of sequences in GenBank increased from 4,864,490 in 1999 to 10,106,023 in 2000, which carried 11,101,066 288 bp. In order to derive meaning from the data, tools are needed, which were along with the databanks/databases. Some of the important databases and resources. It may be noted that there are two main types of databases; (i) single data-type databases which contain one type of information from many or all organisms and (ii) multiple-data-type databases, which contain all types of information from a single organism (e.g. TAIR, MaizeDB, Soybase, etc.) The details of these databases, and the tools for their management are available elsewhere {Pl. Mol. BioI. 48 (1, 2); 2002}.
