International rice genome sequencing project (IRGSP)
The work of sequencing the entire rice genome was initiated in Japan in the year 1998 with the establishment of an International Rice Genome Sequencing Project (IRGSP) led by Takuji Sasaki and was originally targeted to be completed by the year 2008. The work involving sequencing of each of the 12 rice chromosomes has been allotted to individual laboratories around the world (including two laboratories in India, which are sequencing a part of chromosome 11). However, before this international project could even take off, whole genome shotgun (WGS) strategy was used by two private companies to make the rough drafts of rice genome available in the years 2000 and 2001.

In April, 2000, Monsanto with the help of LeRoy Hood at the University of Washington (USA) finished the rough draft of the rice genome, which had a 4x coverage. Monsanto also announced that they will make this rough draft available to the IRGSP to help them expedite the completion of their project ahead of their targeted schedule. The IRGSP therefore, advanced its estimated completion by 5 years and announced that it will complete the sequencing of whole genome by the year 2003 instead of earlier target 9f 2008. Complete sequences of chromosomes 1 and 4 of rice were already published in November, 2002, and the sequences of other chromosomes should follow during 2003.
