Gene organization
Arabidopsisgenes, in general are compact, each gene having many exons, each about 250 base pairs long and interrupted by short non-coding introns, 160-185 base pairs long. These genes are about 4.6 kilobases apart, in contrast to much longer intergenic regions in many other bigger plant genomes. Small intergenic regions also suggest small regulatory sequences for the genes, which is also in sharp contrast to long regulatory sequences (upto 10 kb) known in many animal genes. The exons in Arabidopsis genes are GC rich (44%), relative to the GC content in introns (32%), which is considered to be a distinctive feature of plant genes.
