Arabidopsis genes vs animal genes
When the gene content of Arabidopsiswas compared with those of the multicellular animal genomes sequenced then, it was found that in Arabidosis, the number of singletons was about 11,500 and the number of distinct gene families was about 15,000, which was little higher than that predicted for nematode worm, C elegans(13,601) and little less than that predicted for the fruitfly, D. melanogaster(18,424). However, many of the genes (presumably house keeping genes) were similar between plant and animals, suggesting common origin of animals and plants.
