Mutant gene for a protein necessary for cell to cell movement of virus in the host

In certain viruses (e.g. white colour mosaic virus or WCIMV) there are genes, which encode non-virion proteins that are necessary for cell to cell movement of the virus (but not necessary for viral replication). A mutation in one of these genes may hamper cell to cell movement of the virus.

One such approach was used (reported in 1994), where a mutant version of a gene encoding WCIMV-13kDa protein was used for producing transgenic plants. The transgenic plants were found to be resistant to several viruses. The mutant transgene was found to be dominant over the normal gene of virus infecting the transgenic host.
