Improved Nutritional Quality (Functional Food and Neutraceuticals)

Transgenic crops have also been produced to provide for functional food and neutraceuticals. Functional food is defined as the food consumed as a part of normal diet, but would have, in addition to basic nutritional function, physiological benefit and/or reduced risk of chronic diseases.

Neutraceuticals, on the other hand, are products isolated or purified from foods that are generally sold in medicinal forms biopharmaceuticals.

Examples of transgenic plants developed for functional food and neutraceuticals include those that would have reduced concentration of life threatening substances like several allergens, and will also have high concentration of other health promoting nutrients including improved quality of storage proteins (e.g., food grain, rich in lysine and sulphur rich amino acids), altered fatty acid composition in edible oil, a variety of vitamins, anti-oxidants, cholesterol lowering margarine with plant sterols, low calorie polysaccharides and iron fortified food.
