Since infrastructure and the expertise for plant transformation may not be available everywhere, the concept of establishing plant transformation facilities has been welcome by many. For a number of important crop species, including grain legumes, cereals and conifers, transformation is technically demanding, so that a plant transformation facility if available on payment (or through collaboration) may be utilized. Keeping in view the above, in USA, a number of academic and government institutionshave decided to establish core plant transformation facilities. Once can utilize these facilities particularly if the objective is research only, although the ownership of the final transgenic material, if commercialized, will be governed by the relevant intellectual property rights or IPRs .
