Uses of Molecular Genetic Maps
Mapping of major genes of economic value using molecular markers (tagging)
Molecular markers can be used to map positions of genes for simple traits as well as those for polygenic traits (alo described as quantitative trait loci or QTLs). Once these genes are mapped the molecular markers linked to specific genes or gene clusters (gene tagging) can be used in selection schemes for plant breeding (see later for details). Molecular markers mapped very close to important genes can also be used for isolation of these genes through map based cloning.
