In Indian music, the teacher pupil relationship is the most significant factor in the teaching and learning of music - the guru-shishya tradition. In the past there used to be a system of gurukul Ashram where teachers imparted knowledge to deserving students. A person considering a career in music should have musical sense, which means a sense of time and rhythm, besides versatility, creative ability and also stage confidence. Above all, it is extremely necessary for the person to be serious and committed to art.

Only regular practice of music over several years can yield a good result and help in becoming a successful musician.Training in music is essential in any field or type of music, be it Indian classical or Western Jazz.In India, there are quite a few musical programmes like TVS Sa-Re-Ga-Ma, and Meri Awaz Suno, which offer a platform for launching new talent. The music channel also organises contests for aspiring vocalists to make an impact on the popular music scene.

There are many musicians working at semi-professional level in hotels, clubs or T.V. production houses, playing or singing or giving music for stage dramas or dance performances or fashion shows etc.Lyricists song - writers can earn vast sums of money or hit the lowest of low. Many pop artists write their own lyrics.

In the pop circuit you could either team up with a group of musicians or you could perform them as a solo artist.A music degree from any recognized university with formal training in music can make one eligible for good positions in the executive level. e.g. in All India Radio and Doordarshan etc.

One can join in schools as music teacher. A musician can open music school and work as a freelance musician. To become DJs and VJs, apply and see where it takes you.

Sound and recording engineers can be either from the engineering stream or they must possess a formal musical background, but many have emerged from the background of a strong interest and understanding of music. In the same way to become a music critic one should have, besides formal knowledge, good understanding and a keen interest in music and flair for writing. One could start as a freelancer attending concerts shows until some one takes notice.

Artist management can also be considered as one of the emerging options. Skill and creativity are both essential, for the job covers the planning, organization, negotiation of an artist's career

In recent years Indian music has become popular over the globe; may be because of its therapeutic effect. Most of the US Universities have teachers,professors in Indian music under the banner of Ethnomusicology. Besides USA, Europe, South East Asian countries etc. too have institutions for Indian music.

Music therapy is becoming an established health profession mostly in western countries. Music therapists are a unique breed of musician-counsellors, with specialized training in the use of rhythm and melody to improve psychological and emotional well-being. In USA there are colleges,universities which offers undergraduate graduate and even Ph.D. degrees in Music therapy. Besides psychiatric hospitals, music therapists work with rehabilitation centres, residences for the mentally disabled etc.
