This scheme supports training in forms of music, dance and theatre whose practice and patronage are dwindling. It also covers training in musical instruments, and especially aims to help young members of traditional communities (and families) of performers who no longer enjoy the benefits of traditional teaching systems.

The scheme offers honorariums to teachers and stipends to students, and brings teachers and learners together in a situation replicating the traditional model. Usually, the training period extends to five years. About 25 training programmes have been conducted under the scheme. In past years, this scheme has supported the teaching of Dhrupad and, further, helped to promote the art through Dhrupad festivals and seminars

Currently, a number of training programmes in instrumental music is being conducted by eminent teachers under the scheme - in Sarangi, Nagaswaram, Thavil, etc other current programmes are in Bharatanatyam, for members of the Isai Velallar community, under Guru Kittappa Pillai, and in Yakshagana puppetry under Kogga Kamath-award-winners of Sangeet Natak Akademi. Training programmes in female roles in traditional Kuchipudi theatre and in Sufiana Kalam of Kashmir have begun recently
