Sangeet Natak Akademi is the National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama, It was established by the Government of India in 1952 with the objectives of promoting research in the fields of Indian music, dance and drama and for this purpose, to establish a library and museum; to encourage exchange of ideas and enrichment of techniques between different regions in regard to the arts of music, dance and drama; to publish research on Indian performing arts; to revive and preserve folk traditions in different regions; to sponsor and encourage festivals, seminars and conferences; to give recognition to individual artistes of outstanding achievement; to foster cultural contacts between different regions of the country and with other countries to cooperate with similar Akademis, institutions and associations for the furtherance of these objectives.

The Akademi has since functioned as an autonomous organization, and is funded by the Department of Culture of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. The registered office of the Akademy is located at Rabindra Bhavan, 35 Feroze Shah Road, New Delhi. This building also houses the two other national Akademis: Sahitya Akademi and Lalit Kala Akademi.Sangeet Natak Akademi has three constituent units, two of these being dance-teaching institutions: the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA) at Imphal, and Kathak Kendra in Delhi.

JNMDA has its origin in the Manipur Dance College established by the Govt. of India in 1964 and subsequently renamed after India's first Prime Minister.It offers several comprehensive courses in the dance and music of Manipur, as well as other arts like Lai Haraoba and Thanga-ta. The courses are designed as a foundation for professional artistes. The Production unit of the Academy has a rich repertoire of traditional contemporary works .

Similarly, Kathak Kendra is one of the leading teaching institutions in Kathak dance. It offers courses in various levels in Kathak dance and in vocal music and Pakhawaj.The third constituent unit of the Akademi is Rabindra Rangashala. The management of Rabindra Rangashala was transferred to the Akademi in 1993. It is situated on Delhi ridge and has an open-air auditorium with a seating capacity of 7,000 people.

Initially, the National School of Drama and the Asian Theatre Institute were also established by the Akademi. Later the Asian Theatre Institute merged with the National School of Drama when it separated from the Akademi in 1975 and became an autonomous organization. It was registered as a Society the same year.
