A recording studio and a dubbing room have facilitated recording on
the premises of the Akademi. But from its early years the Akademi has also been active in recording in the field - with little equipment or resources at first, but with plenty of enthusiasm. Extensive field - recordings have yielded valuable archival material, particularly on the tribal, folk and traditional performing arts. The Akademi's team has travelled to different parts of the country, recording region-specific performances and performances by gurus and masters, bringing them into national focus.

At times it was a one-man unit moving with a still and movie camera, and a wire or tape-recorder, recording masters like Amubi Singh, Shambhu Maharaj, and Vedantam Laxminarayana Sastry (in conversation with T. Balasaraswati).
Besides, during the period 1978-1981, traditional music, dance and theatre were extensively recorded at various festivals such as the Bhavai Festival at Morvi, the Festival of Tribal Music and Dance of Kutch at Bhuj, the Bhakti Sangeet Samaroh at Somnath, the Gujarat Adivasi Festival at Dang, etc. Masters of Kutiyattam and Mudiyettu of Kerala and the dance and music of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Assam were also recorded during this period.

Some of the notable field-recordings of the last five years cover the tribal dances and music of Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tripura, the Chhau dance of Seraikella and Mayurbhanj - with interviews and demonstrations by gurus - the Kalachakra ceremony conducted by H.H. the Dalai Lama at Jispa, Himachal Pradesh, the Bhagavat Mela of Melattur, Krishnattam and Theyyams of Kerala, and the music, dance and theatre of Assam. The Akademi has produced a number of films, VHS copies of which are available for sale

The video-films on Mani Madhava Chakyar, Kanglai Haraoba and Mayurbhanj Chhau are complications made from the archival holdings of the Akademi. A programme for the bringing out pre-recorded cassettes of music from the archives of the Akademi is also on the anvil.During the past few years the emphasis has been on recording eminent masters in various disciplines

Among these recording are detailed interviews with mallikarjun Mansaur, Dilip Chandra vedi, Bismillah Khan, Sumati Mutatkar, Prem Lata Sharma, Gangubai Hangal, Rahim Fahimuddin Dagar, utpal Dutt and k. Sivarama Karanth.
Performances by eminent musicians have also been recorded.
Among dance gurus, interviews and demonstrations by Pankaj Charan Das, Kelucharan Mohapatram Birju Maharaj, Vempati Chinnna Satyam, Vedantam satyanarayana Sarma and several other masters have been video-filmed. A major segment of recent recordings focuses on some of the traditional performing arts of Kerala: Kathakali, Kutiyattam, Theyyam and Krishnattam. These recordings are of performances (including items from old repertories) and interviews with masters like Ammannur Madhava Charyar and Ramankutty Nair.
A valuable addition to the archives are the recordings of artists presented at Swarna Samaroh- a festival of music and dance.
An information system for the archives of the Akademi was developed in 1995 with the help of the Regional Computer Centre. The system would help easy access to the archival material once data entries are completed.
