Yuva Utsavs
Promoting young talent in traditional music and dance is a means of sustaining these arts. With this in view the Akademi started a scheme to support performances by young artists in 1971. Between 1971 and 1976, four festivals were held; about 70 dancers and 28 musicians performed in these events. The programme was revived in 1985, the International Youth Year, with an emphasis on scouting talent and creating performance opportunities for young artists. In addition, the performances, earlier presented mostly in cities, moved on to towns, creating new audiences in smaller places.

Several hundred young dancers and musicians have been presented in these festivals, which have served as a platform for artists to launch their professional careers. The festivals have showcased young talent in the country, and a number of artists introduced in these events have been invited to perform in national and international music and dance festivals, winning wider recognition .

The festivals have also strengthened Sangeet Natak Akademi's linkages with arts organizations all over India, and helped the Akademi keep in touch with the music and dance situation at various centres of performance and training. The programme continues, with periodic festivals of dance and music-titled Nrityotsava and Sangeetotsava.
The Akademi has organized festivals specific to States under this scheme. Performances by young Odissi dancers and demonstrations by gurus have been presented in Bhubaneswar, and a similar event featuring Kuchipudi performers has been organized in Hyderabad.
