Dance and choreography, like every other example in the field of Fine arts, has made great advancecs -- from temple dance, court dance, folk dances, various classical and traditional dances of the country to tap dance, break dance, jazz, hip-hop, rock 'n roll, Afro jazz styles and so on. A leading exponent of modern day dancing and a sensational choreographer of this genre, Shiamak Davar, who came to limelight with the blockbuster "Dil To Pagal Hai", followed by "Taal" runs an institute in Mumbai where courses in these forms of dances are offered. The institute, called Shiamak Davar's Institute of Performing Arts (SDIP A), welcomes enthusiasts of almost any age.

According to Davar, a professional dancer requires three basic qualities -- dedication, honesty -- to be true to yourself and your work and being professional, that is, getting your priorities right. Training in classical dance and at the early age of six or seven is helpful. Doing it later when the body has already taken shape and the muscles have become used to a certain routine would take a longer time to get into shape. A classically-trained dancer has more body awareness. Davar stresses that students of dance should imbibe commitment and dedication.

Dancing has developed into a profession rather than mere art. There are a number of people who are making a living out of dances of every hue. Thanks to films and television, western dance has also become popular. Even a mix of Indian dance with that of western is also doing good business.
