A career in music, dance, drama, and fine arts is nonetheless demanding than a job in other fields. Talent, genuine interest, sincerity and willingness to work hard can guarantee a big success in the field of music and fine arts.

No short cut to success
Some people make the mistake of considering music as an easy route to fame and money, to a fun-filled and glamorous career because it includes modelling and acting. But competition nowadays is keen. Talent alone is no guarantee for success, one needs to have publicity, contacts with the right people, money for training and for making demo cassettes for commercialization. In other words, one should be able to sell his art/music successfully and profitably.

Only devotion pays
It should be kept in mind that music demands devoted riyaaz, or practice. Just joining an institution and singing for an hour or two is not enough, if you aspire to reach the high point. The emphasis should be on real devotion. Everyone from K.L.Saigal, S.D. Burman, Hemanta Mukherjee, Mohammad Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey to A.R.Rehman, Mani Ratnam or Alisha Chinai, Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan, Lucky Ali, Daler Mehndi, Baba Sehgal, Shreya Ghoshal has had to work very hard to achieve their status.

Numerous avenues
With the advent of satellite television, floodgates have opened for earning big money as DJs, VJs and a myriad other roles as never before. Could one have imagined TV channels like MTV or V channels a decade or so ago? Many of the youngsters have immensely benefitted from music platforms such as "Sa Re Ga Ma" or Meri Awaz Suno" where one can test if one has the potential and, if so, one can be an instant success, with commercial production houses and advertising firms lurking in every corner.

Those with a poetic bent of mind can try their luck as lyricists, song-writers or even jingle writers. Besides job opportunities in schools, colleges, universities, as teachers and also as private tutors, there are sufficient openings for self-employment for artists with entrepreneurial skills. This is evident from the popularity of audio and audio-visual cassettes and the importance of music in the world of cinema. To further add to the list of careers in music there are instrument repairers, tuners, and copyists, booking agents, concert managers, music publishers, and music store owners and managers, as well as salespersons of records, sheet music, and musical instruments.

Big compensation
Music as one of the oldest performing arts has always drawn ardent devotees to its fold. The current generation is no exception with the lucre and lustre being what they are today. For instance, a school music teacher under the new TGT grade begins with a salary of around Rs.8,000, while a college lecturer starts at Rs.11,000 plus. Private tuitions too are no less attractive. AIR's 'Yuv Vani' programme encourages young talent and pays around Rs.500 per slot (Figures are subject to upward revision from time to time).
