Genomic clone.
A piece of DNA taken from the genome of a cell or animal, and spliced into a bacteriophage or other cloning vector. A genomic clone may contain coding regions, exons, introns, 5' flanking regions, 5' untranslated regions, 3' flanking regions, 3' untranslated regions, or it may contain none of these...it may. only contain intergenic DNA (usually not a desired outcome of a cloning experiment!).

Germinal epithelium
1. A layer of epithelial cells on the surface of the ovary that are continuous with the mesothelium 2. The layer of epithelial cell lining the seminiferous tubules of the testis, which gives rise to spermatogonia. See spermatogenesis.

Genotype
(from gene + type) 1. The genetic constitution (gene makeup) of an organism. 2. The pair of alleles at a particular locus, e.g., Aa or aa. 3. The sum total of all pairs of alleles at all loci that contribute to the expression of a quantitative trait.cf phenotype. 4. Two uses: one is a verb, the other a noun. To 'genotype' (verb) is to example polymorphisms (e.g. RFLPs, microsatellites, SNPs) present in a sample of DNA. You might be looking for linkage between a microsatellite marker and an unknown disease gene. With such information, you can infer the chromosomal location of the unknown gene, and can sometimes identify the gene. As a noun, a 'genotype' is the result of a genotyping experiment, be it a SNP or microsat or whatever.

Genus
(PI: genera) A somewhat arbitrary group of closely related species, where perceived relationship is typically based on physical resembalance

GEO
Genetically engineered organism. See GMO.

Geotropism
(Gr. ge, earth + tropos, turning) A growth curvature induced by gravity. a.k.a. gravitropism.

Germination
(L. germinare, to sprout) 1. The initial stages in the growth of a seed to form a seedling. The embryonic shoot (plumule) and embryonic root (radicle emerge and grow upwards and downwards respectively. Food reserves for germination come from endosperm tissue with the seed and/ or from the seed leaves (cotyledons). 2. The growth of spores (fungal; algal) and pollen grains. germ layers; primary germ layers The layers of cells in an animal embryo at the gastrula stage, from which the various organs of the animal's body will be derived.

Germ
1. In botany, a common name for a plant embryo. 2. Colloquial: A disease-casing micro organism.

Germ cell
Any cell in the series of cells (the germ line) that eventually produces gametes. In mammals, germ cells are found in the germinal epithelium of the ovaries and testes.

Germ cell gene therapy
The repair or replacement of a defective gene within the gamete forming tissues, resulting in a heritable change in an organism's genetic constitution.
