On the Basis of Distribution

On the basis of their distribution in environment, the micro-organisms can be classified into three categories:

(i) Hydrospheric or Aquatic: Those microbes that grow in water.

(ii) Lithospheric or Terrestrial: Those microbes that grow on or in soil or rocky-substances.

(iii) Atmospheric or Aerial: Those microbes that are found in atmosphere. Atmosphere is their temporary abode as they cannot grow and multiply in air in absence of adequate moisture and nutrients.
