Recruitment as Sailors
Eligibility Conditions: Age: 16-19 Marital Status: Unmarried Male Indian Citizens. Educational Qualifications: Matriculation or equivalent with 60% aggregate marks in Maths and Science, English OR 10+2 or equivalent with 50% aggregate marks in Maths, Physics and English.

Note: Preference is given to candidates with working knowledge of Computers.

Medical Standards: Weight correlated to height and proportionate chest with minimum expansion of 5 cms. God medical and physical health, free from any disease/ disability. No Cardio-vascular, surgical deformities or infection of ears. No history of fits or psychiatric aliment. Minimum height: 157 cms. Minimum eye standard: Without glasses better eye 6/6 and worse eye 6/9 with glasses. Colour perception: CP II.

Training: The India Navy is a high technology service which operates and maintains highly sophisticated ships, submarines and aircraft. These weapon platforms are manned by sailors who are given training at various intervals during their service. The initial basic training of 24 weeks is given at INS CHILKA in Orissa. This is followed by further training in naval establishments all over the country. Sailors are also sent abroad for training in selected disciplines. Prior to release from service sailors are also given pre-release courses to enable them to settle down in civil life.

Initial Engagement: The initial engagement is for 15 years subject to successful completion of training.

Pay and Allowances: At present during the initial training period of 6 months the emoluments are approximately Rs. 4500/-pm. On completion of training, at present sailors draw monthly emoluments of approximately Rs. 5300/- to Rs. 16000/- depending on the rank and years of service. Children education, House rent and Transport allowances are also admissible.

Other Facilities: All sailors are entitled to food, accommodation and medical treatment for self and dependents. Groups Hosing Benefits, Leave Travel Concession for self and dependents and other privileges at Government expense. Insurance cover of Rs. 75000/- is privileges Naval Headquarters at a nominal premium of Rs. 750/- per month. Sailors also have the privilege to avail up to 60 days annual leave and 30 days casual leave every year. Post retirement benefits include pension, gratuity and leave encashment.

Promotion: Promotion prospects exist up to the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer-I (equivalent to Subedar Major). Opportunities for promotion to Commissioned Officer also exist for those who perform well and pass the prescribed examinations.

Selection Procedure:
Some of the highlights of procedure are:
(a) All applications are received through ordinary post. Short listing criteria is based on higher education and percentage of marks. Result of the written test is announced on the same day. (b) Those who qualify written test undergo PFT and Medical Exam which may take 3-4 days. The select list is prepared from the candidates who qualify in all respects depending upon the available vacancies.

Physical Fitness Test:

Qualifying in Physical Fitness Test in mandatory for enrolments. The standard of PFT is as follows:
(i) One mile (1.6 KM) run to be completed in 7 minutes. (ii) 20 Squat ups (Uthak-Baithak). (iii) 10 push ups.

Written Test:
The question paper for the Written Test has four sections viz. (i) English (ii) Science (iii) Maths (IV) G.K. to be answered in Hindi or English. Questions are of objective type and the standard of the question paper in that of Matriculation level. Duration of the exam is one hour.
