Direct Entry 3-Year Diploma Holders and Matric Entry Recruits (MER)

The Indian Navy is a high technology service, which operates and maintains highly sophisticated ships, submarines and aircraft, the propulsion machinery, weapons, sensors and equipment on board. These weapon platforms are operated and maintained by sailors, who are given training at various intervals during their service. The initial basic training is given at INS-Chilika, Distt.-Khurda, Orissa. This is followed by further training at various Naval Establishments all over the country. Selected sailors are also sent abroad for training in specific disciplines.

Eligibility:
For MER: Age: Between 18-22 years as on the first day of commencement of the course. Marital Status: Unmarried male Indian citizens. Subject of Nepal are also eligible.
For Direct Entry: Age: 18-22 years.

Educational Qualification:
Matric Entry Recruitment (MER). Minimum 60% marks or above in aggregate in matriculation/ equivalent with Science and Maths or 50% or more aggregate marks in 10+2/ equivalent with Physics and Maths. For Direct Entry Diploma Holders: 3 years diploma with 50% marks in Mechanical/ Electrical/ Electronics/ Telecommunication/ Aeronautical/ Ship Building/ Instrumentation Engineering/ Metallurgical from a Gove. Recognized Institute.

Medical standards:
For MER/DE(DH): Weight co-related with height and proportionate chest with minimum expansion of 5 cms. Good medical and physical health free from any disease/ disability. No cardio-vascular, surgical deformities or infection of ears. No history of fits or psychiatric ailment. Minimum height 157 cms. Colour perception: CPII: Candidates are advised to get their ears cleaned for wax and tartar removed from teeth before appearing for the written test.

Visual Standard: for Dip. Holders: Without glasses: Better Eye: 6/24, Worse Eye: 6/24. With glasses: Better Eye: 6/9, Worse Eye: 6/12.

Training:
For Matric Entry Sailors: MERs are initially given 24 weeks basic training at INS, Chilka in Orissa, followed by 24 weeks professional training in the allotted trades in Naval establishments all over the country. Branch/trade is allocated as per requirement of service.

For DE(DH): Initial basic training of 9 weeks is given at INS Chilka in Orissa. This is followed by afloat and professional training.

Pay and Perquisites:
For MER: Rs. 6300/- pm (approx.) as initial emoluments. Total emoluments at present rates on completion of training of 6 months are Rs. 5300 to Rs. 16,000 pm (approx.) depending on the rank and years of service.

For DE(DH): Rs.6300/- pm as initial emoluments. On completion of training the emoluments range from Rs. 7400/- pm to Rs. 16,900/- pm depending on the rank attained and years of service. Children education and house rent allowances are also admissible as per existing rules.

Other Facilities/ Perks:
Sailors are entitled to food, accommodation, medical treatment, group housing benefits, LTC and other privileges at Government expenses. Insurance cover of Rs. 750,000/- is at nominal premium. Sailors also have the privilege to avail up to 60 days annual leave and 30 days casual leave every year. Post retirement benefits include pension and gratuity.

Terms and Conditions:

Tenure: Initial
engagement for 10 years. Extendable up to the age of 57 yrs.

Promotion:
Promotion prospects exist up to the rank of Master Chief Officer (equivalent to Subedar Major). Opportunities for promotion to Commissioned Officer also exist for those who perform well and pass the prescribed examinations.

Selection Procedure:
Final selection is made on the basis of interview/ S.P. Test held at I.N.S. Chilka prior to commencement of the course. Written Test: Short listed candidates are sent Admit Cards for appearing in written test, at any one of the Examination Centres listed at para below. Subjects: The question paper of written test have four sections viz. (i) English (ii) Science (ii) Maths (ii) General Knowledge. For DE (DH) there are additional sections of Electronics, Electrical and Mechanical. The candidate is required to attempt only one of the sections which is as per the specialisation in which he has completed the three year Diploma. Candidates have to qualify in each section separately. The question paper is of objective type. Result is declared on the same day and successful candidates have to appear in Physical Fitness and Medical Tests.

Physical Fitness Test (PFT): One mile run in 7 minutes, 25 squat ups (Uthak – Baithak) and 10 push ups. Candidates should be prepared to stay for two three days under their own arrangements.
