Commercial Diving Course at Naval Diving School, Kochi

The duration of the course is ten weeks prior to which one week of screening is conducted. The course is conducted on the lines of HSE (Health and Safety Executive, UK) Part I Qualification and the course is termed as IDS (Indian Diving Standard-I. Individuals qualifying the course are certified to work upto a depth of 55 meters using Air Diving equipment.

Eligibility conditions: Male Indian citizens between 18 and 28 years of age.

Educational Qualifications:
(a) Candidates passing 10th class examination of Central/State Education Board and securing 50% or more marks in matriculation are eligible. Alternatively, candidates should have passed subsequent higher examination (XII class) of Central/State level.
(b) Candidates must be fluent either in Hindi or in English.

Medical Standards:
The applicants are required to attach a medical certificate from a registered medical practitioner certifying that the applicant is medically fit to under take strenuous physical activities and is not suffering from the under-mentioned disorders:
(a) Inability of clear the ears via enustachian tubes.
(b) Perforated ear drum, chronic otitis media.
(c) Chronic sinusitis, nasal obstruction.
(d) Obesity-should not be obese.
(e) Dental caries, loss of incisor, artifical dentures.
(f) Any chronic lung disease, past or present and history of thoracic surgery, diabetes.
(g) Any functional or organic cardiovascular disease, essential hypertension, diabetes.
(h) Proven peptic ulcer, chronic diarrhoea, history of extensive abdominal surgery, evidence of hernia or tendency thereto, varicose venis or haemorrhoids unless already successfully treated.
(i) Chronic or recurrent disease of genitor urinary system.
(j) Post history of fits, psychiatric illness, repeated headaches, blackouts, severe concussion or cranial surgery.

(k) Addiction to alcohol and drugs.
(l) Stammering
(m) Skeletal or arthritic disability.
(n) Chronic skin conditions.
(p) STD and AIDS.
On completion of screening, the selected candidates are subjected to a comprehensive medical examination at Naval Hospital, Kochi.
Physical Standards: Candidates should be a good swimmer with good physical stamina.

Mode of Selection:
(a) Vetting of applications: The applications received from the candidates are vetted at Headquarters, Southern Naval Command, Kochi and the call up letters are sent to shortlisted candidates who are required to report to Diving School, Kochi for aptitude test, screening and training. The preference of selection of candidates in order of priority is as follows.
Percentage of marks obtained in 10th class examination of Central/ State Board. Age factor (younger candidates are given preference) and due weightage is given for the same.

Aptitude Test and Screening: Candidates are required to qualify an aptitude test diving and physical fitness. This test is to assess the candidate’s suitability for diving. Those who do not qualify the aptitude test are rejected. Candidates who qualify the aptitude test undergo screening in diving skills and physical fitness. On completion of the screening, twenty candidates are selected to undergo the course.

If the no. of remaining candidates are more than the required vacancies, the candidates further undergo physical test to select the twenty. The decision of OIC Diving School, Kochi is final and binding during selection. Medically fit candidates are advised to build up swimming standard by long distance swimming and physical fitness by long distance jogging prior to reporting for the course. Candidates are cautioned not to undertake unaided/ breath hold diving for the purpose of preparation for the course.

Candidates withdrawn from the course due to unsatisfactory progress or any other reasons are refunded part of the training charges calculated on pro rata basis.

Boarding and Lodging: The candidates are required to make their own boarding and lodging arrangements. However, arrangements can be made by the Officer-in-Charge, Diving School, Kochi for their stay outside Naval Base which is likely to cost about Rs. 1100/- (Rs. One thousand one hundred only) per month.

How to apply: Notification appears in the Employment News and application in the prescribed format are to be sent to the Officer-in-Charge, Diving School, Naval Base, Kochi 682004 by the specified date.

Note: IDS I Course is in the line with HSE (Health and Safety Executive) Part I Course of UK and is recognised by International Marine Contractor’s Association, an International Consultancy Agency on all offshore marine an diving activities.
