Commercial diving Conversion Course (IDS III To IDS I)

Indian Navy conducts Commercial Diving conversion Course from IDS III to IDS I at Diving School, Kochi. The duration of the course is four weeks prior to which one week of work up is conducted. The course is conducted on the lines of HSE (Health and Safety Executive, UK) Part I qualification and the course is termed as IDS (Indian Diving Standard-I). Individuals qualifying the course are certified to work upto a depth of 55 meters using Air Diving equipment.

Eligibility: Medical Standards: The applicants are required to attach a Medical Certificate from a registered medical practitioner certifying that the applicant is medically fit to undertake strenuous physical activities and is not suffering from the under-mentioned disorder:-
(a) Inability to clear the ears via eustachian tubes. (b) Perforated ear drum, chronic otitis methods. (c) Chronic sinusitis, nasal obstruction. (d) Obesity-should not be obese. (e) Dental caries, loss of incisor, artificial dentures. (f) Any chronic lung disease, past or present and history of thoracic surgery. (g) Any functional or organic cardiovascular disease, essential hypertension, diabetes. (h) Proven peptic ulcer, chronic diarrhoea, history of extensive abdominal surgery, evidence of hernia or tendency thereto, varicose veins of hemorrhoids unless already successfully treated. (i)Chronic or recurrent disease of genitor urinary system. (j) Past history of fits, psychiatric illness, repeated headaches, blackouts, severe concussion or cranial surgery. (k) Addiction to alcohol and drugs. (l) Stammering. (m) Skeletal or Arthritic disability. (n) Chronic skin conditions. (o) STD and AIDS.

On completion of work up the selected candidates are subjected to a comprehensive medical examination at Naval Hospital, Kochi.

Physical Standard: Candidates should be a good swimmer with good physical stamina.

Mode of Selection: (a) Vetting of Applications: The applications received from the candidates are vetted at Headquarters, Southern Naval Command, Kochi and the call up letters are sent to short-listed candidates who are required to report to Diving School, Kochi for work up and training.

(b) Work up: The candidates are worked up for one week prior to commencement of course. During the work up the candidates are acclimatize to the basic producers of diving which they have learned during the IDS III course. On Completion of work up the training is conducted for IDS I.

Candidates withdrawn from the course due to unsatisfactory progress or any other reasons are refunded part of the training charges as shown at para (b) as calculated on pro rata basis.

Boarding and Lodging: The candidates are required to make their own boarding and lodging arrangements. However, arrangements can be made by the Officer-in-Charge, Diving School, Kochi for their stay outside Naval Base which is likely to cost about Rs.110/- (Rs. One thousand and one hundred) per month.

Other Requirements:
The candidates called for undergoing the work up and training is required to give an undertaking on the prescribed format forwarded alongwith the Call letter. The salient aspects of this undertaking are as follows:

(a) No compensation or claim would be made by the candidates or his next of kin/ heirs or any individual in respect of any loss, damage or injury sustained during the course or occurring on completion of the course. (b) The candidates is willing to abide by the rules, regulations and discipline as required for the course in the Naval area. (c) The candidates is willing to bear the cost of any damage/loss of equipment due to negligence during the course.

Important: (a) Applications not accompanied by copies of certificates of IDS III certificate, medical certificate, two passport size photographs and crossed demand draft are summarily rejected. (b) One self addressed envelope (12x27 cms) is to be forwarded alongwith the application. (c) The name and address of applicant is to be written on the back of the demand draft enclosed with the application. (d) The terms and conditions are subject to change and should, therefore be treated as guidelines only.

Certification: On completion of the course, the successful candidates are awarded certificates duly certified by the Indian Navy on behalf of MOD/GOI.

Note: AII IDS III qualified candidates are advised to use this opportunity for conversion to higher course.
