Artificer Apprentice in the Indian Navy

The Indian Navy conducts a competitive examination for recruitment as an Artificer Apprentice.

Eligibility: Age: 15 years to 18 years as on specified date. Marital Status: Unmarried Male Indian Citizens. Educational Qualifications: 55% or more marks in aggregate in 10+2/ equivalent examination with Physics and Maths.

Medical Standards:
Minimum Height- 157 cms with co-related weight and proportionate chest with minimum expansion of 5 cms. Colour perception. CP II. Good mental and physical health, free from any disease/disability. No Cardiovascular, surgical deformation or infection of ears. No history of fits or psychiatric ailment. Minimum standards without glasses: Better eye: 6/12 and for worse eye: 6/12.

Artificer Apprentice:
Artificers are inducted into the Navy through the Apprentice Entry. Depending on their suitability, Apprentices are allocated trades in Electrical/ Mechanical/ Aeronautical Engineering or Shipwright.

Training: All the apprentices are initially given 9 weeks basic training at INS Chilka, followed by 8 weeks of sea training. Thereafter approx. 2 years training at INS Shivaji/ Valura. On completion of the  training, candidates have qualification equivalent to Diploma in Electrical/ Mechanical/ Aeronautical Engineering, which is recognised by the Government of India for purpose of employment in Central/ State government.

Pay and Perquisites:
During initial training approximate emoluments are Rs. 4300/- pm. On completion of initial training, the total emoluments at present rates are Rs. 7000/- pm to Rs. 16900/- (approx.) depending on the rank and years of services. These are under upward revision. Sailors are entitled to food, accommodation, medical treatment; Group Housing Benefits, LTC and other privileges at Govt. expense. Insurance cover or Rs. 3,50,000/- is available at a nominal premium. Sailors also have the privilege to avail up to 60 days of annual leave and 30 days casual leave every year. Post retirement benefits include pension and gratuity.

Promotion:

Promotion prospects exist up to the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer (equivalent to Subedar Major of Army). Opportunities for promotion to Commissioned Officer also exist for those who perform well and pass the prescribed examinations.

Physical Fitness Test:

Qualifying Physical Fitness Test is mandatory for enrolment. This consists of 1.6 km. run to be completed in 7 minutes, 25 Squat ups (Uthak Baithak) and 10 Push ups.
Written Test. The question paper of the Written Test is bilingual (Hindi and English) and of objective type. The question paper comprises of four sections i.e. English, Science, Mathematics and General Knowledge. The standard of question paper is that of Matric Duration is one hour.

Selection Procedure.

1. Those who qualify undergo Physical Fitness Test (PFT) the same day.

2.Those who qualify PFT undergo medical examination the next working day.

3. Those who qualify declared medically fit would be considered fully qualified and will not be required to stay on at the examination centre.

4. Those who are declared temporary medically unfit are required to appear for Review Medical again on the stipulated date.

5. Depending on the performance of Written Examination, a list of preliminary qualified candidates on All India basis is displayed at all Examination Centres. In addition, the Preliminary qualified candidates are also informed individually.

6. Requires number of preliminary qualified candidates are sent on Railway Warrant to Chilka (Orissa) for Final Selection.

7. The Final Selection is on the basis of Psychological Test and interview conducted at INS Chilka.
