Book Publishing
Book Publishing industry is another component of mass media which offers various opportunities to journalists and those who can write well in their language. In India, publishing industry is very vast. In case of English publications, the readership consists of 20-25 million English literate Indians.

As per the statistics of National Library, Calcutta, the average annual title production in India is around 20,000 if new editions and new prints are included in this figure, its number would be around 60,000 Even though Hindi is our national language, English publications continue to dominate with 400-500 new titles per million persons. The position of regional languages is not uniform, it varies according to the population of each language speaking state.

Demand for books is likely to grow from year to year. According to experts, India will requires books on massive scale over the next few decades. The increasing use of T.V and computer will led to an increase in the demand for books, not a decline.

Both public and private sector organisations offer various positions to persons having adequate skill and knowledge in this field. Besides publication Divisions of Govt. of India and the National Book Trust, Central Government organisations involved in book publication are Directorate of the Scientific and Industrial Research, Indian Council of Agriculture Research, Industrial Research, Indian Council of Agriculture Research, Indian Council of Culture Relations, Sahitya Academy, National Museum, Archaeological Survey of India etc. In addition, all state government and universities have their own publication division. All these departments offer various positions to the young and skilled persons.

These are a large number of book publishing firms engaged in private sector. Some twenty years ago, India had only 3000 active publishers in the private sector. Now the figure has multiplied many folds. But most of the publishers in private sector are small scale publishers, publishing only 5-12 titles a year. Medium and large publishers employ staff for their operations. But as a whole the Indian book publishing today need more specialized professional staff.

In a way, book publishing is one of the earliest industries. For setting up a publishing firm no licence, permit or sales tax registration is necessary not even a registered office, one only needs to publish, worthwhile books and some money to produce at least some of them. A number of individuals have done this successfully.
