High Court
High Courts stand at the head of the State Judicial administration. Each High Court consists of a Chief Justice and other judges, with the total number differing from State to State. The Chief Justice of High Court is appointed by the President of India in consultation with the Chief Justice of India and the Governor of State concerned. To be eligible for appointment as a Judge, one must have held a Judicial Office in India for 10 years or must have practiced as an advocate of High Court for a considerable period.

There are also Registrars who attend to all administrative matters pertaining to Subordinate Courts and Correspondence with Government, other High Courts and district and subordinate courts. List of High Courts in India is given at the end of this chapter.

Supreme Court
The Supreme Court of India consists of a Chief Justice and not more than 25 other Judges appointed by the President of India. For appointment as a Judge of the Supreme Court, a person must have the following qualifications: He must be a citizen of India. He must have held the post of a Judge/ Advocate of a High Court or two or more such Courts in succession at least for a period of 5 years. or He must be, in the opinion of the President, a distinguished jurist.
