Nickel amines
Anhydrous nickel salts and nickel salts in the presence of aqueous ammonia amines, e.g., [N: (NH)6]2+ (deep blue).

Nickel arsenate
Ni3(AsO4)2.H2O,, poisonous yellow-green powder; soluble in acids, insoluble in water; used as a fat-hardening catalyst in soapmaking. Also known as nickelous arsenate.

Nickel phosphate
Ni3(PO4)2.7H2O, a light green powder; soluble in acids and ammonium hydroxide, insoluble in water; used for electroplating and production of yellow nickel. Also known as nickelous phosphate; trinickelous orthophosphate.

Nickel bromide
NiBr2, salts of nickel are prepared in hydrous and anhydrous forms e.g. NiBr2.3H2O and NiBr.9H2O.

Nickel carbonate
NiCO3, light-green crystals that decompose upon heating ; soluble in acid, insoluble in water; used in electroplating.

Nickel carbonyl Ni(CO)4,colourless, flammable, poisonous liquid boiling at 430C;soluble  in alcohol and concentrated nitric acid; insoluble in water; used in gas plating (vapour decomposes at 600C) and to produce metallic nickel. Also known as nickel tetracarbonyl.

Nickel cyanide
Ni(CN)2.4N2O, poisonous, water-insoluble apple-green powder; melts and loses water at 2000C, decomposes at higher temperature; used for electroplating and metallurgy.

Niobic acid
Nb2O5.nH2O, family of hydrates; white precipitate, soluble in inorganic acids and bases, insoluble in water; its formation is part of the analytical determination of niobium.

Nickel fluorides
NiF2, yellow green forms double salts perovskites e.g., KniF3, K3NiF6 and K2 NiF6.

Nickel iodide
NiI2  orNiI2.6H2O, hygroscopic black or blue-green solid; soluble in water and alcohol; sublimes when heated. Also known as nickelous iodide.

Nickel nitrate
Ni(NO3)2.6H2O, fire-hazardous oxidant; deliquescent, green, water-and alcohol-soluble crystals; used for nickel plating and brown ceramic colours, and in nickel catalysts.

Nickel oxide
NiO, green powder; soluble in acids and ammonium hydroxide; insoluble in water; used to make nickel salts and for porcelain paints. Also known as green nickel oxide; nickelous oxide.

Nickel silver
A group of alloys of copper, zinc and nickel in ranging proportions.

Nickel steel
Steel containing up to 6% nickel.

Niobium
A chemical element symbol Nb, atomic number 41, atomic weight 92.906.

Niobium carbide
NbC, a lavender grey powder with a melting point of 35000C; used for carbidetipped tools and special steels.

Niobium oxides (Nb2O5)
A dense white material obtained by dehydration of the hydrated oxide formed by the hydrolysis of halides.
