Muntz metal
An alloy of copper (60%) and zinc (40%).

Muonium
An electron plus a muon, for mally analogous to hydrogen.

Muriate
An obsolete name for a chloride; e.g., mutiate of potash (KCl)

Mustard gas (CH2ClCH2)2S
An oil, density 1.28 boiling point 215ºC, used in chemical warfare. Also known as dichlorodiethyl sulphide.

NAPD
Nicotinamide adenine di-nucleotide phosphate.

Natron
A mineral form of hydrated sodium carbonate, Na2CO3H2O.

Neodymium
A toxic silvery element having two allotropic forms and belonging to the lanthanoid series of metals. It occurs in association with other lanthanoids. Neodymium is used in various alloys, as a catalyst, and in compound form in carbon-arc searchlights, etc., and in the glass industry.

Neptunium
Symbol Np, a radioactive metallic transuranic element which belongs to the actinoids; a.n. 93; r.a.m. 237.0482. The most stable isotope, neptunium-237, is having half-life of 2.2 +106 years and is produced in small quantities as a by product by nuclear reactors Other isotopes are having mass numbers 229.236 and 238-241. The only other relatively long-lived isotope is neptunium-236 (half-life 5x 103 years). the element was first produced by McMillan and Abelson in 1940.

Nesquehonite
A mineral form of magnesium cabreonate trihydrate, MgCO3.3H2O
A mineral form of magnesium cabreonate trihydrate, MgCO3.3H2O.Neutral neither acid nor alkaline. Containing equal numbers of hydroxyl and hydrogen ions and having a pH of 7.

Neutral oxide
An oxide that forms neither an acid nor a base on reaction with water. Examples include carbon monoxide (CO), dinitrogen oxide (N2O), and water (H2O) .

Neutrino
An elementary particle with-out charge nd with spin ½, postulated by Pauli to account for the conservation of angular momentum in nuclear transformations. Neutrinos appear to have variable finite mass and to oscillate from one type to another.

Neutron
One of the fundamental particles in an atom. It has same mass as a proton but is electrically neutral

Neutron number
Symbol: N, the number of neutrons in the nucleus of an atom; i.e. the nucleon number (A) minus the proton number (Z).

Nichrome
Tradename for a group of nickel chromium alloys which are used for wire in heating elements as they possess good resistance to oxidation and have a high resistivity. Typical is Nichrome V having 80% nickel and 19.5% chromium, the balance consisting of manganese, silicon, and carbon.

Nickel (II) hydroxide or nickelous hydroxide Ni(OH)2
A green precipitate obtained on treating a nickelous salt solution with caustic soda. The precipitate dissolves in excess of ammonia forming blue solution which contains the complex ion, Hi(NH3)62+ nickelacetate [CH3COO2N14H4O]
A green crystalline soluble substance, used in nickel plating.
