Ilenite, FeTiO3
A black Ti ore occurring in massive form and in sands. The structure has cp oxygen with Fe and Ti in octahedral co-ordination.

Impregnation
Intimate admixture of one substance with another, usually a solid, which retains its original form.

Index of unsaturation

A numerical value that represents the number of rings or double bonds in a molecule. A triple bond is considered to have the numerical value of 2.

Inert Gases
The six chemically inactive gaseous elements belonging to group 18-He, Ne, Br, Kr, Xe and Ra.

Inorganic Chemistry
The branch of chemistry concerned with compounds of elements other than carbon. Certain simple carbon compounds, such as CO, CO2, CS2, and carbonates and cyanides, are usually treated in inorganic chemistry.

Instability constant
The reverse of a stability constant; the measure of dissociation.

Insulin
(C6H10O5)x, a fructose polysaccharide of approximately 30 fructofuranose units. It is present in the underground tubers and rhizomes of the compositae.

Interstitial compound
A crystalline compound in which atoms of a nonmetal (e.g., carbon hydrogen or boron) occupy interstitial positions in the crystal lattice of a metal.

Interhalogenoids
Such compounds are formed by the combination of two pseudohalogens. These compounds are similar to the interhalogen compounds.
Cyanogen derivatives of other pseudo-halogens have been reported. Examples are cyanogen thiocyanate, (CNSCN), cyanogen azido-di-thiocarbonate (CNSCSN3).

Invar
An iron alloy containing 35-36% Ni, 0.5% C, and 0.5% Mn which has zero co-efficient of thermal expansion up to 2050C.

Iodic acid
Refers to any of various oxoacids of iodine, such as iodic (V) acid and iodic (VII) acid. When used without an oxidation state specified, the term usually refers to iodic (V) acid (HO3).

Iodide
A compound of iodine with another element or radical.

Iodine monochloride (ICI)
A dark red liquid which is obtained by passing chlorine over iodine. It has properties similar to those of its constituent halogens, iodine monochloride is used as a nonaqueous solvent and as an iodating agent in organic reactions.
