Carborundum
formally the trade name for SiC produced by the Carborundum Co. but in practice also used for SiC from other sources.

Carcinogen
an agent that cause cancer in animals such as tobacco smoke or ionizing radiation.

Cementite
(Fe3C), a constituent of certain cast irons and steels. The presence of cementite increase the hardness of the metal.

Ceric sulphate
Ce(SO4)24H2O, yellow needles forming a basic salt with excess water; used in water-proofing, mildew-proofing, and in dyeing and printing textiles.

Carnotite
a radioactive mineral consisting of hydrated uranium potassium vanadate K2(UO2)2(VO4)2.nH2O. It varies in colour from bright yellow to lemon-or greenish-yellow. It is a source of uranium, radium, and vanadium

Cassiterite
a yellow, brown, or black form of tin (IV) oxide, SnO2, that forms tetragonal, often twinned, crystals; the principal ore of tin. It is found in hydrothermal veins and metasomatic deposits associated with acid igneous rocks and in alluvial (placer) deposits.

Cast iron
an electrolytic method used for the manufacture of sodium hydroxide using Castner-Kellner cell.

Cathode
an electrode which pulls the electrons form the external circuit or at which reduction occurs

Ceric oxide
CeO2, a pale-yellow to white powder, soluble in sulphuric acid, insoluble in dilute acid and water; used in ceramics and as a polish for optical glass. Also known as ceria; cerium dioxide; cerium oxide.

Cation
a positive ion obtained by removal of electrons from atoms or molecules.

Caustic
describing a substance that is strongly alkaline (e.g., caustic soda).

Celestine
SrSO4, native strontium sulphate, a major source of Sr compounds. Mainly colourless but some specimen are sky blue in colour.

Cell
a system used as a source of electrical energy. A cell consists of two electrodes.

Cell reaction
the overall chemical change the takes place in electrolytic cell or a galvanic cell.

Cellulose
it is the main structural unit of the cell walls of all plants.

About 50% of the living world is cellulose. It is a linear polymer of b-D-glucose.

Centrifuge
a device used to increase the rate of sedimentation of suspensions. Used to separate solid, liquid or two immiscible liquids.

Cerium
a chemical element, symbolCe, atomic number 58, atomic weight 140.12 ; a rare-earth metal, used as a getter in the metal industry, as an opacifier and polisher in the glass industry, in Welsbach gas mantles, in cored carbon arcs, and as a liquid-liquid extraction agent to remove fission products from spent uranium fuel.
cerium dioxide, CeO2 it is also called ceria. It is a white crystalline substance and is used in glass polishing.
