Blanc fixe
Precipitated BaSO4 used as a fine white pigment in coating paper. It does not absorb ink.

Bland
Any chemical which does not irritate nor causes discomfort to people, e.g., live oil

Block copolymerization
Copolymerization in which individual units are joined together in relatively long sequences. Branched copolymers of this type are graft copolymers.

Bond angle
The angle between bonds sharing a common atom. Also known as valence angle.

Blast furnace gas
By product gas form smelting iron ore, obtained by the passage of the hot air over the coke in the blast furnaces. A typical gas will analyze 12.9% carbon dioxide, 26.3% carbon monoxide, 3.7% hydrogen, 5701% nitrogen.

Bleach
Any substance used to remove colour from materials such as cloth from materials such as cloth and paper. All bleaches are oxidizing agents, and in clued chlorine, sodium chlorate (I) solution (NaCIO, sodium hypochlorite), hydrogen peroxide and sulphur (IV) oxide. Sunlight also has a bleaching effect.

Bleaching earths
There are two types: (1) fuller’s earth possessing absorptive properties in the natural state, (2) activated clay in which the absorptive powders which are low in the raw state are enhanced by hear or chemical treatment (usually a mild acid leach).

Blue print paper
Light sensitive paper (turns blue) impregnated with [Fe(CN)3]3- and iron(III) citrate of oxalate. The paper is fixed by washing with water. Brown print paper is having a metal (Pt, Pd, Au, Hg, Cu) salt and Fe(III).

Boat conformation
A boat-shaped conformation in space which can be assumed by cyclohexene or similar compounds; a relatively unstable form.

Bleaching powder (CaOCI2)
A white solid which is thought to be a mixture of calcium chlorate (I) calcium chloride, and calcium hydroxide. Bleaching powder is sold on the basis of available chlorine, which is liberated when it is treated with a dilute acid. It finds use for bleaching paper pulusand fabrics and for sterilizing water.

Bleed
Diffusion of colour in matter from a substance.

Blende, sphalerite
ZnS, generally contains some Fe which gives a dark colour.

Blister copper
Copper (96.99% purity) produced by the reduction and smelting of copper ores.

Blue tetrazolium
C40H32CI2N8O2, lemon yellow crystals that decompose at 242-2450C; soluble in chloroform, ethanol, and methanol; used in seed germination research, as a stain for molds and bacterial, and in histochemical studies. Also known as dimethoxy neotetrazolium; ditetrazolium chloride; tetrazolium blue.

Blue vitriol
Copper (II) sulphate pentahydrate (CuSO4. 5H2O)

Bohrium
A synthetic radioactive element first detected by bombarding a bismuth target with chromium nuclei. Only a small number of atoms have ever been produced. Symbol: Bh; p.n. 107; most stable isotope 262Bh (half life 0.1s)

Boiler scale
A racklike deposits occurring on boiler walls and tubes in which hard water has been heated or evaporated. Consists largely of calcium carbonate; calcium sulphate of similar materials, depending on the mineral content of the water.
