Bessemer process
Method for producing steel from cast iron utilizing oxidation of the molten metal with

Air to remove silicon, carbon and manganese, their oxides form a slag with the convertor lining.

Beta iron
An allotropic from of pure iron, it is stable between 7680C and 9100C and is non-magnetic.

Beta ray
A stream of beta particles

Bicarbonate
A traditional name for a hydrocarbonate

Bidentate
A ligand that coordinate through two bonds from different parts of the molecule or anion, e.g., carbonate, oxialate and ethylenediamine.

Binary acid
An acid in which the acidic hydrogen atom(s) have been bound directly to an atom other than oxygen. Examples are hydrogen chloride (HCI) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S) such compounds are sometimes called hydracids.

Binary compound
A chemical compound of two elements only that is denoted by the suffix-ide e.g., calcium carbide, CaC2

Binding
A term given to the ability of polymer chains to hold together and form stable structures.

Biosynthesis
Refers to the production of molecules by a living cell, which is the essential feature of anabolism

Biotite
A component of igneous rocks and of soil, similar to mica. It is a silicate of magnesium, iron, potassium and aluminium

Beryllium hydroxide
[Be(OH)2] a solid that can be precipitated form beryllium containing solutions by an alkali. In an excess of alkali, beryllium hydroxide dissolves to give a beryllate. In this way, beryllium add aluminium hydroxides are smaller and the reaction is an indication that beryllium hydroxide is Amphoteric.

Bismuth alloys
Alloys of bismuth with Pb, Sn and Cd of low m.p. Used for fire protective devices, fuses, solders.

Beryllium Sulphate
(BeSO4) an insoluble salt prepared by the reaction of beryllium, oxide with concentrated Sulphuric acid. On heating, it breaks down to give the oxide. When haeated in the presence of water, it readily dissolves to give an acidic solution

Bismuth
A brittle pinkish metallic elements which belongs to group v of the periodic table. It is found native and in the ores Bi2S3 and Bi2O3. Bismuth is widely used in alloys, especially low-melting alloys. Compounds find use in cosmsetics and medicines.
Symbols: Bi: m.o. 271.30C; b.p. 15600C; r.d. 9.75; p.n. 83; r.a.m. 208.98

Bismuth chromate
Bi2O3.Cr2O3, an orange-red powder, soluble in alkalies and acids; used as a pigment

Bismuth citrate
BiC6H5O, a salt of citric acid that forms white crystals, insoluble in water; used as an astringent.

Bismuth dichloride (BiCI)2
Obtained by heating bismuth with calomel at 523 k.

Bismuth hydroxide
Bi(OH)3, a water-insoluble, white powder; precipitated by hydroxyl ion from bismuth salt solutions.

Bismuth iodide
Bil3, a bismuth halide that

Sublimes in greyish-black hexagonal crystals melting at 4080C insoluble in water; used in analytical chemistry.
