Avagadro’s number
it is the number of particles present in one mole of a substance i.e. 6.023 × 1023 particles. It is represented by N or L.
N or L = 6.023 × 1023

Available chlorine
the quantity of chlorine released by a bleaching powder when treated with acid.

Average molecular weight
the calculated number to average the molecular weights of the varying-length polymer chains present in a polymer mixture.

Azetidine
a colourless liquid, b.p. 61˚C, smelling of ammonia. It dissolves in polar solvents.

Axial angle
1. The angle subtended by the refracting ray with the optic axes.
2. It is the acute angle subtended by the two optic axes in a biaxial crystal.

Azine
refers to an organic heterocyclic compound that has a hexagonal ring containing carbon and nitrogen atoms. Pyridine is the simplest example.

Azole
a class of N-containing heterocyclic five numbered ring, e.g., amidazole, 1,2,3-benzotriazole.

Azurite
Cu3 (OH)2 (CO3)2. Blue basic carbonate of copper. an artificial form is known as Blue Verditer of Blue Ashes and is used as a gem stone.

Back donation
refers to a of chemical bonding in which a ligand forms a sigmabond to an atom or ion by donating a pair of electrons, and the central atom donates electrons back by overlap of its d-orbitals with empty p-or d-orbitals on the ligand.

Backflash
rapid combustion of a material occurring in an area that the reaction was not intended for.

Bacteriocidal
capable of killing bacteria. Common bactericides are some antibiotics, antiseptics and disinfectants.

Baddeleyite
one form of ZrO2 and a principal mineral source of Zr. Normally contains some Hf which must be removed if the Zr is to be used in reactors.

Baking soda
it is sodium bicarbonate (Na H CO3).

Ball mill
refers to a device commonly used in the chemical industry for reducing the size of social material. Ball mills have slowl rotating steel or stone-lined drums, which contain steel balls, flint, or pebbles. The material is crushed by the tumbling action of the contents of the drum.

Barite (heavy spar)
BaSO4, natural barium sulphate. Transparent barite crystals are used in optical instruments; employed as protection from X-rays, as a material for coatings in the chemical industry.

Barft process
refers to a process formerly used for protecting iron by heating it in steam, to form a layer of tri-iron tetraoxide (Fe2O4).

Barium
a dense, low-melting reactive metal; the fifth member of group II of the periodic table and a typical alkaline-earth element.

Barium carbonate
(BaCO3), a white insoluble salt that is found naturally as the mineral witherite. Barium carbonate can be readily precipitated by adding an alkali carbonate to a barium salt solution.
