Aqua regia
a mixture of concentrated nitric acid and three parts of hydrochloric acid. It dissolves all metals including gold, hence the name. The mixture is having chlorine and NOCI.

Aquation
the process of replacement of other ligands by water.

Aqueous solution
this is a solution where water is the solvent.

Arsenic oxide
refers to a white amorphous deliquescent solid. It is an acidic oxide prepared by dissolving arsenic (III) oxide in hot concentrated nitric acid, followed by crystalisation then heating to 210˚C.

Aragonite CaCO3
it is a variety of CaCO3

Arene
refers to an organic compound containing a benzene ring, i.e., an aromatic hydrocarbon or derivative.

Arsine
(arsenic hydride, AsH3). A poisonous colourless gas having an unpleasant smell. It decomposes to arsenic and hydrogen at 230˚C. It is produced in the analysis for arsenic (Marsh’s test).

Argon
a rare gas which is contained in air in a 1 per cent proportion. Its mass is 40, but there is an isotope of mass 41, formed by the absorption of a neutron by argon 40. Argon 41 is radioactive, and it cannot be subjected to chemical reaction, because it is inert. This gas also constitutes a danger in piles in which the air is irradiated by neutrons. This circumstance necessitates the taking of special precautions to avoid contamination by argon 41.

Arsenate
a metal salt of arsenic acid, H3AsO4

Argentite
a sulphide ore of silver, Ag2,S. It crystallizes in the cubic system but most commonly occurs in massive form.

Arsenic
a toxic metalloid element which is existing in several allotropic forms, the most stable has been a brittle grey metal. It belongs to group V of the periodic table. Arsenic occurs native and in several ores including mispicket (FeSAs), real-gar (AsS), and orpiment (As2S3). It finds use in semiconductor devices, alloys, and gun shot, Various compounds have been used in medicines and agricultural insecticides and poisons.
symbol: As; m.p. 817˚C (grey) at 3 MPa pressure; sublimes at 613˚C (grey); r.d. 5.73 (grey; p.n. 33; r.a.m. 74.92.

Arsenic (III) chloride
arsenious chloride, (AsCI3) A poisonous only liquid. It fumes in moist air due to hydrolysis with water vapour.

Arsenic (V) oxide
a white arsenic oxide, (As2O5) white amorphous deliquescent solid. It is an acidic oxide prepared by dissolving arsenic (III) oxide in hot concentrated nitric acid, followed by dissolving arsenic (III) oxide in hot concentrated nitric acid, followed by crystallization then heating to 210˚C.

Ascarite
asbestos which is impregnated with molten NaOH. Used to absorb CO2.

Asphaltites
naturally occurring hard bitumens of high purity containing only 1-2% or mineral matter.

Associated liquids
liquids having combined aggregates of two or more molecules e.g. water. alcohol.

Association
combination or correlation of substances or functions.

Astatine
a radioactive element which belongs to the halogen group. It occurs in minute quantities in uranium ores. 20 short-lived radioisotopes are known, all alpha-particle emitters. symbol: At; m.p 302˚C; b.p 337˚C; p.n. 85; stablest isotope210 At (half-life 8.3 hours).
