Alundum
an artificial from of corundum (a-Al2O3), Which is made by fussing calcined bauxite in an electric furnace, and allowing the molten product to cool rather rapidly.
Alundum is used for highly refractory bricks, crucibles, refractory cement and muffles; also for small laboratory apparatus used as high temperature (combustion tubes, pyrometer tubes, etc.).

Alunite or alum stone
a natural compound of potassium and aluminum sulphate and aluminium hydroxide. It is a source of alum.

Ammoniacal
Pertaining to ammonia or its properties. Also known as ammoniac.

Ammoniation
treating or combing with ammonia.

Amalgam
an amalgam is an alloy which contains mercury. Zinc amalgam is used for teeth fillings. Amalgamation was once used to extract gold and silver from crushed rock to earth which contained these metals.

Amalgams
intermetallic compounds of mercury. Some have definite compounds, e.g., NaHg2 and are effective alloys. Hg rich amalgams are liquid. Fe does not form amalgams and is used for contains for mercury. Used in dental stoppings, cadmium amalgam is the cathode in the Weston standard cell.

Americium (Am)
a synthetic element obtained by neutron irradiation of pure Plutonium. Am and Am are good oxidizing agents. Am¾241 is used as a source of a particle. Its m.p. 994°C and b.p. is 2607°C.

Amination
the conversion of aldehyde or ketone into amine by reacting them with hydrogen and ammonia in the presence of a catalyst.

Ammonium alginate
(C6H7O6. NH4), a highmoleculer  weight, hydrophilic colloid; used as a thickening agent/stabilizer in ice cream, cheese, canned fruits, canned fruits, and other food products.

Ammine
a coordination compound formed by the union of ammonia with a metallic substance, in such a way that the nitrogen atoms arte linked directly to the metal.

Ammonation
a reaction in which ammonia is added to other molecules or ions by covalent bond formation utilizing the unshared pair of electrons on the nitrogen atom, through ion-dipole electrostatic interactions.

Ammonia
NH3 colourless gaseous alkaline compound that is very soluble in water, has a characteristic pungent odour, is lighter than air and is formed as a result of the decomposition of most nitrogenous organic material; used as a fertilizer and as a chemical intermediate.

Ammonia solution
(NH4OH) (formerly called Ammonium hydroxide). A solution of ammonia in water.

Ammonia water
water solution of ammonia; a clear colourless liquid that is basic because of dissociation of NH4 OH to produce hydroxide ions: used as reagent solvent, and neutralizing agent.

Ammonium bicarbonate
NH4HCO3 white, crystalline water-soluble salt used in baking powders and in firextinguishing mixtures. Also known as ammonium acid carbonate; ammonium hydrogen carbonate.

Ammonium borate
NH4BO3, a white crystalline, water-soluble salt which decomposes at 198°C; used as a fire retardant on fabrics.
