Molecular Biology for Drug Discovery

The drugs are no longer developed by the imagination of a chemist, but result from a dialogue between chemists and biologists. Consequently, several disciplines including chemistry, pharmacology, microbiology and biochemistry shape the course of drug discovery. More importantly, during the last quarter of the 20th century, the research in the area of molecular biology had profound effect on drug discovery. It is for this reason alone that almost invariably the annual Nobel Prizes, in the field of Medicine or Physiology and sometimes also that in the field of chemistry, are awarded for important discoveries in the field of molecular biology that have relevance to medicine.
