Real Time Monitoring of Cell and Biomass Concentration
Particularly, on-line real time measurement and monitoring of these variables is not easy. One of these variables that is not routinely and automatically monitored is cell concentration. Therefore, efforts have been made to devise reliable methods and to design new instruments for real-time measurement of cell concentration, to allow bioprocess monitoring and control.

1. Sensor 1
2. Sensor 2
3. Sensor 3
4. Bioreactor
5. Cell return line
6. Harvest
7. Bioreactor
8. Retention device feed line
9. External cell retention device

In conventional fermenter, measuring cell concentration at one time is sufficient, but modern bioreactors will require real-time measurement and control of cell concentration. This monitoring will be achieved by removing cells trough a cell harvest line (if concentration is too high) and by adding cells through a cell return device (if concentration is too low). Methods for monitoring cell concentration is directly measured or it can be indirect, where cell concentration is measured indirectly through the measurement of oxygen uptake rate or carbon dioxide evolution rate as an index of metabolic rate.
