Acoustic resonance densitometry (ARD)
This method is based on a linear relationship between fluid density and the resonance frequency of cell culture sample, which is enclosed in a test chamber and excited electromagnetically to vibrate at its natural frequency. Fluid density is measured from the square of oscillation period of the sample and has been successfully used for monitoring he biomass concentration of hybridoma and human lymphoma cell cultures.

Real-time monitoring of cell concentration using acoustic resonance densitometry (ARD); readings of ARD are sent to computer for real time processing
1. Temperature pH pO2 2. Cell culture pumped through ARD (determine density of fluid) 3. Hollow fiber device (determine density of supernatant)
4.Cell culture returned to bioreactor 5. Spent medium

A hollow fibre device is used to filter out the supernatant, so that its density is determined and subtracted from the density of cell culture, to give a density due to cells for estimation of cell concentration.
