Uses of Leather Industry
Proteolytic enzymes from certain bacteria and fungi are used in the manufacture of leather. These enzymes digest the collagen or connective tissue holding the hairs to the hide in the skin and thus cause dehairing of the skin. These enzymes are also used for softening or plumping of dehaired skin, a process popularly called batting.
Manufacture of detergents
Proteolytic enzyme alcalase is added in many detergents and helps in removing proteinaceous stains from the cloth.
Manufacture of organic compounds
Enzymes from certain bacteria are also used for commercial production of acetone, butanol, lactic acid, citric acid and many other metabolites by the fermentation of carbohydrate rich substrates. Several enzyme preparations under different trade names are commercially available for such purposes.
