Non Disjunction

Non disjunction is the failure of separation of homologous chromosomes during cell division.

It is discovered by Bridges.
It occurs in man, Drosophila and Datura (plant).
It occurs in meiosis or mitosis or cleavage.

The non-disjunction occurring in mitosis is called mitotic non-disjunction.

The non-disjunction occurring in meiosis is called meiotic non-disjunction.

The non-disjunction occurring in organisms which are the results of previous non-disjunction is called secondary non-disjunction.

In human beings, syndromes are caused by non-disjunction. Syndrome is a disease caused by a group of symptoms.

In man, the following syndromes are produced by non-disjunction.
1. Klinefelter’s syndrome.
2. Turners’ syndrome.
3. Down’s syndrome.
4. Primary non-disjunction in Drosophila.
