DNA is the Genetic Material

Most of the organism are formed from a single zygote which is formed by the fusion of male and female gametes. Only these male and female gametes carry and transmit the hereditary characters from parents to offspring. In the gamete which component carries and transmits the hereditary character is a matter of discussion for a long time. Since the chromosome is the common component in both gametes, it is believed that chromosomes carry and transmit the hereditary characters.

The chromosome itself is formed mainly by two types of chemical substance, namely nucleic acids and the chromosomes were responsible for the transmission of hereditary characters from one generation to next generation. But recent developments in molecular biology revealed that, the nucleic acids of the chromosomes are responsible for the transmission of hereditary character. The nucleic acid which carries the genetic information is DNA.

It is illustrated by a number of experiments and they are as follows:
1. Amount of DNA
2. Stability
3. Mutation
4. Composition
5. Transformation
6. Bacteriophage infection
7. Bacterial conjugation
8. Transduction
