X Chromosome
One of the two sex chromosomes, X and Y. See also: Y chromosome, sex chromosome.

X Inactivation

The random cessation of transcription from one X chromosome in mammalian females. This compensates for the difference in X chromosome dosage between males and females.

X Linkage

The pattern of inheritance of genes located on the X chromosome.

X Linked
Diseases occurring due to a mutation or defect on the X chromosome.
Hemophilia, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and color blindness are examples of diseases whose genes are located on the X chromosome. Males are most often affected with X linked disorders. This is the same as the formerly used term, sex linked.

Xenograft

Tissue or organs from an individual of one species transplanted into or grafted onto an organism of another species, genus, or family. A common example is the use of pig heart valves in humans.
