Tandem repeat
An aberration in which two identical chromosomal segments lie one behind the other.

Tandem repeat sequences

Multiple copies of the same base sequence on a chromosome; used as markers in physical mapping.

Targeted mutagenesis

Deliberate change in the genetic structure directed at a specific site on the chromosome. Used in research to determine the targeted region’s function.

Tarsier
One of three species of small nocturnal primate belonging to the genus Tarsius, found in Sumatra, Borneo, Celebes, and the Philippines. They have a nacked tail, 130 270 mm (about 5 11 inches) long, that makes up about half the total length of their bodies (220 460 mm or between 8 and 19 inches). Tarsiers have enormous eyes, large hairless ears, and gripping pads at the end of their digits. They are mainly arboreal, using both hands to seize insects and small vertebrates such as lizards.

TATA box
A short nucleotide sequence found within many eukaryotic promoters, 20 to 30 base pairs upstream of the transcription start site. RNA polymerase binds to the TATA box. The actual consensus sequence of the TATA box is TATAAA.
2. A segment from the startpoint of eukaryotic structural genes to which RNA polymerase binds; the nucleotides most commonly found are TATAAAA.

Taxon (plural taxa)
Any named taxonomic group, such as the family Felidae, or the genus Homo, or the species Homo sapiens. Also, a formally recognized group, as distinct from any other group (such as the group of herbivores, or the group of tree climbers).

Taxonomy
The theory and practice of biological classification.

Tay
Sachs
A fatal degenerative disease of the nervous system due to a deficiency of hexosaminadase A, causing mental retardation, paralysis, blindness and death by 3 4 year of age. Found most commonly in people of Ashkenazi Jewish and French Canadian ancestry.

Technology transfer
The process of transferring scientific findings from research laboratories to the commercial sector.

Telocentric chromosome

A chromosome in which the centromeres is found at the end of the chromosome.

Telomerase
The enzyme that directs the replication of telomeres.
2. An enzyme that adds short repeated nucleotide sequences to the ends of eukaryotic chromosomes.

Telomere

The end of a chromosome. This specialized structure is involved in the replication and stability of linear DNA molecules.
The end of a eukaryotic chromosome.
