Regulator Gene
a gene whose primary function is to control the rate of synthesis of the products of other distant genes.

Regulatory region or sequence

A DNA base sequence that controls gene expression

Repressible System

A regulatory system in which the product of a regulator gene blocks transcription of the operon only if it first reacts with an effector molecule; thus, transcription only occurs in the absence of the effector.

Reinforcement
An increase in reproductive isolation between incipient species by natural selection. Natural selection can directly favor only an increase in prezygotic isolation; reinforcement therefore amounts to selection for assortative mating between the incipiently speciating forms.

Relative Dating

The process of ordering fossils, rocks, and geologic events from oldest to youngest. Because of the way sedimentary rocks form, lower layers in most series are older than higher layers, making it possible to determine which fossils found in those layers are oldest and which are youngest. By itself, relative dating cannot assign any absolute age to rocks or fossils.

Release Factors
Soluble proteins that recognize termination codons and terminate translation in response.
2. Specific proteins that read termination codons and cause the release of the finished polypeptide.

Repetitive DNA

Sequences of varying lengths that occur in multiple copies in the genome; it represents much of the human genome.

Replication
A duplication process requiring copying from a template.

Replicon
A genetic element that behaves as an autonomous unit during DNA replication; contains a segment to which a specific RNA polymerase binds and a replicator locus at which DNA replication commences.

Repressor
A protein synthesized by a regulator gene that binds to an operator locus and blocks transcription of that operon
