Monohybrid cross
A genetic cross between two individuals differing in only one character, or in which
only one character is under consideration (eg. AA x aa).

Monophyletic group
A set of species containing a common ancestor and all of its descendants, and notcontaining any organisms that are not the descendants of that common ancestor

Monosomy
Possessing only one copy of a particular chromosome instead of the normal two
copies. 2. A diploid cell missing a single chromosome. A cell or  individual that has only one copy of one particular chromosome pair. 3. A condition in which one member of a chromosome pair is missing.

Monosomic
Having only one chromosome of a homologous chromosome.

Monotreme
Egg-laying mammals.

Monotremes

A group (specifically, an order) of mammals whose females lay eggs. The young hatch and continue to develop in the mother's pouch, which is present only when needed. Two species of spiny anteater and the duck-billed platypus are the only living monotremes.

Monozygotic
Referring to a twin pair in which both members are derived from a single embryo. Compare with dyzygotic.

Monozygotic twins
Result from a separation of a fertilized egg; genetically identical.

Moore, James
The author, with Adrian Desmond, of an authoritative biography of Charles Darwin, Moore has made a 20-year study of Darwin's life. With degrees in science, divinity, and history, he has taught the history of science at Harvard University and at the Open University in the U.K.

Morbid map
A diagram showing the chromosomal location of genes associated with disease.

Morphogen
A substance that induces the development of form or structure in an embryo.

Morphology
The study of the form, shape, and structure of organisms.

Mouse model
Model organisms.

MRNA (messenger ribonucleic acid)
An RNA molecule transcribed from the DNA of a gene, and from which a protein is translated by the action of ribosomes. The basic function of the nucleotide sequence of mRNA is to determine the amino acid sequence in proteins. 2. Messenger RNA; an RNA molecule that functions during translation to specify the sequence of amino acids in a nascent polypeptide.

Mosaicism
A tissue containing two or more genetically distinct cell types, or an individual composed of two or more genetically distinct cell lines.

Mueller, Ulrich G.
A zoologist and professor whose research aims at understanding microevolutionary forces and macroevolutionary patterns that govern the evolution of organismal interactions, particularly the evolution of mutualisms and the evolution of social conflict and cooperation. Mueller's current, research focuses on the coevolution between fungus-growing ants and their fungi and the evolutionary ecology of halictine bees.
