Inversion
An event (or the product of the event) in which a sequence of nucleotides in the DNA is reversed, or inverted. Sometimes inversions are visible in the structure of the chromosomes.
2. Chromosome segments that have been turned through 180 degrees with the that the gene sequence for the segment is reversed with respect to that of the rest of the chromosome

In vitro fertilization (IVF)
Combination of an egg and a sperm outside of the mother’s body to create an embryo that is implanted in her uterus.

In vitro
Latin meaning “ in glass”; refers to things that occur in an artificial environment such as a test tube.
Studies performed outside a living organism such as in a laboratory.

In vivo
Latin meaning “in life”; refers to things occurring in a living organism.
Studies carried out in living organisms.

In situ hybridization
Use of a DNA or RNA probe to detect the presence of the complementary DNA sequence in cloned bacterial or cultured eukaryotic cells.

Inversion
A chromosomal mutation involving the removal of a chromosome segment, its rotation through 180 degrees, and its reinsertion in the same location. The replacement of a section of a chromosome in the reverse orientation.
2. A chromosomal aberration in which a portion of a chromosome has been reversed relative to the rest of the chromosome.

Isochromosome

A chromosome with two genetically and morphologically identical arms.

Isoenzyme
An enzyme performing the same function as another enzyme but having a different set of amino acids. The two enzymes may function at different speeds.

Isolating mechanism
Any mechanism
Any mechanism, such as a difference between species in courtship  behaviour or breeding season, that results in reproductive isolation between the species.

Isolation
Synonym for reproductive isolation.

IUGR
Intrauterine growth retardation. Determined by ultrasound, baby’s growth is not commensurate with dates.

Isotope
An atom that shares the same atomic number and position as other atoms in an element but has a different number of neutrons and thus a different atomic mass.

IQ
An abbreviation of “intelligence quotient”, usually defined as the mental age an individual (as measured by standardized tests) divided by his or her real age and multiplied by 100. This formulation establishes the average IQ as 100. the usefulness and reliability of IQ as a measure of intelligence has been questioned, inpart because of the difficulty of devising standardized tests that are free of cultural biases.
