DCIS
Ductal carcinoma in situ. Cancer limited to the ducts of the breast. It may or may become invasive.

DecoGen Informatics System
Genassance pharmaceuticals’ proprietary informatics platform, named for its ability to decode genes. The system is designed to integrate genomic variation information into the pharmaceutical development and marketing process. The system consists of proprietary database of population information for our Index Respository and for our HAPTM Marker sequence, frequency and distribution.

The portal to the HAP® Database is a search engine, which is powered by a proprietary collection of algorithms and which has been designed with an intuitive, graphical user interface. The search engine can determine with statistical accuracy the correlation between a drug response and HAPTM Markers in a small population of the size commonly used in phase I or phase II of clinical trial

Deformation
A type of structural defect characterized by the abnormal from or position of a body part caused by mechanical force.

Degeneracy
The specification of one amino acid by more than one codon

Deletion
A loss of part of the DNA from a chromosome; can lead to a disease or abnormality. See also: chromosome, mutation
2. The loss of a sequence of DNA from a chromosome. The deleted DNA may be of any length from a single base to a large part of a chromosome.
3. The loss of a segment of the genetic material from a chromosome.

Deletion map
A description of a specific chromosome that uses defined mutations -specific deleted areas in the genome - as biochemical signposts, or makers for specific areas

Dembski, William

A mathematician and philosopher who has written on intelligent design, attempting to establish the legitimacy and fruitfulness of design within biology.

Denaturation
The loss of native structure by a macromolecule, usually accompanied by a loss of biological activity. Denatured DNA becomes single-stranded, whereas denatured proteins unfold.
2. The loss of the native configuration of a macromolecule resulting from that treatment, chemical treatment, etc., this represents the dissociation of the double helix into its complementary strands

Density gradient centrifugation
A technique of separation using a gradient of densities established by adding a high molecular weight salt such as cesium chloride; the mixture to be separated is layered in the gradient and then centrifuged until each molecule reaches the layer in the gradient with a density equal to its own.

De facto
In fact reality. Something which exists or occurs de facto is not the result of law, but because of circumstances.

Dennett, Daniel
Philosopher and director of the Center for cognitive studies at Tufts University, whose work unites neuroscience, computer science, and evolutionary biology. Dennett sees no basic distinction between human and machine intelligence, advocating a mechanical explanation of consciousness. He is the author of Brainchildren: Essays on Designing Minds and Darwin’s Dangerous Idea: Evolution and the Meanings of Life, among other books and publications
