Allopatry
Living in separate places. Compare with sympatry.

Allopolyploidy

The combination of genetically distinct chromosome sets that results in a polyploid organism.

Allosteric protein
A protein that may change its shape as a consequence of interaction with another molecule.

Allozygosity
Having two homologous genes at one locus that are of independent origin, as far as can be determined from a pedigree.

Alternative splicing
Different ways of combining a gene's exons to make variants of the complete protein.

Ames test

An assay developed by Bruce Ames to test for the mutagenicity (and probable carcinogenicity) of compounds.

Amino acid
Any of a class of 20 molecules that are combined to form proteins in living things. The sequence of amino acids in a protein and hence protein function are determined by the genetic code.
2. The building blocks of proteins. These are coded for within the DNA.
3. Any of a family of subunits that are joined covalently to produce polypeptides.
4. The unit molecular building block of proteins, which are chains of amino acids in a certain sequence. There are 20 main amino acids in the proteins of living things, and the properties of a protein are determined by its particular amino acid sequence.
5. Any of the subunits that are polymerized to form proteins.

Amino acid sequence
A series of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, usually coded for by DNA. Exceptions are those coded for by the RNA of certain viruses, such as HIV.

Amino terminus (N terminus)
The end of a polypeptide containing a free amino group; the end of the polypeptide where protein synthesis began.

Aminoacyl (A) site
The site of a ribosome that contains the incoming aminoacyl tRNA.

Aminoacyl tRNA
A molecule consisting of an amino acid linked to one of its specific tRNA molecules, in preparation for protein synthesis.

Amino-acyl tRNA synthetase
An enzyme that activates amino acids and attaches each activated amino acid to its own species of tRNA.
