Changing styles of clothes give a boost to the Indian textile and fashion industry. India's heritage in exotic fabric design, costumes and handicrafts has significantly added to the existing potential for a more creative approach to growth in this field. At present there is a lot of scope for designers in India and they have a tremendous potential for growth.

Designers, at times, specialise in one or two areas such as women's wear, men's wear, children's wear, or even jewellery designing. Designers at junior levels often find jobs with manufacturers who produce low range garments. Slowly and steadily with experience they are engaged by manufacturers who design a higher range.

Fashion designing is a creative field that involves conceiving innovative ideas and designs. A fashion designer creates garments, textiles, handbags, shoes, belts and even jewellery. At times, the entire collection is purely traditional and at others it is a blend of different cultures.

During a discussion with some designers, one aspect came to light. In India a lot of "real talent" goes waste because of lack of foresight on the part of these aspiring designers. Instead of joining a professional designer just after passing out they decide to join export houses. Joining an export house is not wrong but real talent requires a variety of experience.
A guide should not only recognize talent but also give it the right direction whereas in an export house, especially in India, export orders are made according to specifications of buyers and there is hardly any creativity involved, thereby reducing the designer to the position of a fashion coordinator who just looks after manufacture and quality of garments.
